Largest Commercial Database
in Winter Corp. TopTen™ Survey
Tops One Hundred Terabytes
Peak Workload Measurement Exceeds
One Billion SQL Statements per Hour
WALTHAM, Mass (September 14, 2005)
— Winter Corporation, experts in large databases, today announced the
award winners in the 2005 Winter TopTen™ Program, a survey of the world’s
largest and most heavily used databases. The program identifies the
database practitioners who develop or manage these extraordinary systems,
and reveals the products, platforms and architectures that are expanding
the boundaries of database size and power.
TopTen Program participants complete an
online questionnaire and run validation scripts to authenticate their
results. Details of the program can be found at
http://www.wintercorp.com.
New Milestones
The 2005 program results establish new
milestones in database scalability along several dimensions.
-
The size of the largest
commercial database increased three-fold since the 2003
program, topping the 100 TB mark.
-
The largest Windows data
warehouse is 19.5 TB, more than doubling the mark set in the
2003 survey.
-
The number of rows/records
rose markedly in the past two years. The 2005 leading result
is 2.8 trillion rows, a five-fold increase since 2003.
-
For the first time, the peak
workload on a system exceeds 1 billion SQL statements per
hour.
-
And also, for the first time,
Linux appears as a platform for large databases.
Winter Corp. will provide more detailed
analysis of the research finding in publications available later this
year.
Leading Participants
A Yahoo! database was the first
system in the ten-year history of the program to surpass the 100 TB mark.
The 100.4 TB Unix-based data warehouse infrastructure includes the Oracle
Database, Fujitsu Siemens PrimePower system, and EMC storage.
The largest OLTP system is Land Registry
for England and Wales. The 23.1 TB system employs IBM DB2 Universal
Database for z/OS database management software, IBM eServer z990 system,
and IBM and Hitachi storage.
"Winning this prestigious award again for
being the world's largest OLTP database is a marvelous achievement,
demonstrating the enormous capability and professionalism of our dedicated
IS staff,” said John Wright, Director of Information Systems.
UPS’ shipping system
achieved a peak workload of 1.1 billion SQL statements per hour. UPS uses
IBM DB2 Universal Database for z/OS database management software, IBM
eServer z990 system and IBM storage.
“UPS database solutions provide a
technological foundation for enabling global commerce," explained
Konstantin Tadenev, Data Architect. "We are very pleased that the Top Ten
Program recognizes UPS' leadership in database technology."
Other Grand Prizes are awarded to
Amazon.com, AT&T, HP, Max-Planck-Institute
for Meteorology, USGS National Center/EROS, Sprint,
T-Systems DDM GmbH, and US Bureau of Customs
and Border Protection.
“The individuals and enterprises that
break new ground—that overcome obstacles and barriers to advance practices
in large scale data management systems—deserve to be commended for their
achievements,” said Richard Winter, president of Winter Corp.
