Top Ten Winners of the

1997 VLDB Survey Program

The 1997 survey asked respondents to provide the size of the database, number of concurrent users and total number of rows or records. In addition, the databases were sorted by primary usage - transaction processing versus decision support - and separate rankings were compiled for each classification. Some categories comprised all operating systems whereas others appraised only UNIX systems in order to track the shift towards open computing.

The 13 categories of winners in the 1997 program are:

Transaction processing:

1. Largest Database Size, All Environments*
2. Largest Database Size, Unix Only
3. Most Concurrent Users, Unix Only
4. Most Concurrent Users, All Environments*
5. Most Rows/Records, All Environments*
6. Most Rows/Records, Unix Only

Decision Support:

1. Largest Database Size, All Environments*
2. Most Rows/Records, All Environments*
3. Total Database Size, Unix Only
4. Most Concurrent Users, Unix Only
5. Most Rows/Records, Unix Only
6. Most Concurrent Users, All Environments*

Federated Systems:

1. Largest Database Size, Decision Support, All Environments*
