The 1997 survey asked respondents to provide the size of the database, number of concurrent users and total number of rows or records. In addition, the databases were sorted by primary usage - transaction processing versus decision support - and separate rankings were compiled for each classification. Some categories comprised all operating systems whereas others appraised only UNIX systems in order to track the shift towards open computing.
