1998 VLDB Survey Program TopTen Winners The 1998 survey asked respondents to provide the size of the database, total number of rows or records, and peak online activity. In addition, the databases were sorted by primary usage - transaction processing versus decision support - and separate rankings were compiled for each classification. Some categories comprised all operating systems whereas others, in order to track the shift towards open computing, appraised only Unix systems. In the categories in which the Grand Prize winner was a federated database, we named a non-federated Grand Prize winner. Therefore, some of the TopTen lists may contain 11 winners.
